A look back – What happened at WI in 2021?

Protected Areas:

  • Canada: Thanks to your sponsorships, the land of wolves, elk and spirit flowers is now permanently protected!
  • Peru: We have purchased 497 hectares of tropical primary forest – our largest land acquisitions to date. 60 per cent of the Land of the Sloths is already protected (30 hectares) and will soon be added to the sponsorship platform!
  • In addition, we secured two nature conservation concessions covering 1,537 hectares.
  • We have established our organisation in Peru, formed partnerships with Fauna Forever and Wasaí Lodge, and recruited Santiago ‘Chiki’ Duran as our first forest guardian.

Partnerships:

  • Together with Quantum Systems, we carried out our first Lidar and multispectral flights in Peru – opening up new possibilities for research in our protected areas.
  • In Canada, we expanded our network to include the CLAC trade union.

‘My Tree – My City’ tree-planting campaigns:

  • Over 650 volunteers planted 28,300 trees in Dresden. Thanks to funds from 2019 donations, a further 11,500 will follow next year.
  • Chemnitz is the fourth city to adopt the scheme. The launch saw 200 black alders planted; a total of 250,000 trees will be planted in the city – for biodiversity and the climate.

Team:

  • Johann-Georg has joined our German team and is responsible for sustainability partnerships.
