The first totem pole created by the Cowichan Indians for Cologne is a guiding or signpost pole. This is a very powerful spiritual symbol in their tradition. This totem pole is like a lighthouse, guiding travellers between two cultures or two nations.
The eagle soars high above, showing us the way. The she-bear is a protector who promises safety to all those who embark on such a journey. The she-wolf is a teacher. She signals to everyone to pay attention to the many hidden lessons that the Creator will show us along our path. The salmon remind us to be not only courageous, but also humble. They show us that the veil between life and death is very fragile. Just like the salmon, we begin our lives as tiny creatures before we must venture out into the vast ocean of life, where we will face many challenges along the way, never knowing when our time will be up. And like the salmon, which swims upstream against the current with incredible strength, we too must remain strong and must never give up. The eagle, the she-bear, the she-wolf and the salmon on this totem pole stand tall and are full of courage. They bridge the gap between the two worlds and offer their protection, strength and wisdom to those brave enough to walk this path.
