Impressions from the nature reserve

Amidst all the greenery, the colourful splashes of tiger lilies and raspberry bushes can be seen. Tiny hummingbirds flit nimbly from flower to flower; their rapid wing beats – up to 80 per second – are nothing more than a blurred streak of cinnamon brown.

Hummingbirds such as this cinnamon-backed fairy can hover mid-air to sip the sweet nectar deep from the flower with their long beaks. Then these lightweights, weighing just 4g, have already vanished back into the thicket of ferns and leaves.
