    Protecting wilderness effectively

We protect unspoilt natural areas effectively and permanently. Through targeted measures and the legally secure acquisition of wilderness areas, we safeguard these ecosystems, conserve biodiversity and combat climate change. We are active in Canada and Peru.

    Creating sustainable conditions

We work closely with local farmers, communities and international partners to promote sustainable development projects. Through our collaborations, we create conditions that support the long-term protection of wilderness areas and improve the quality of life for people in the target regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why does it make more sense to protect existing woodland than to plant new trees?

Climate change calls for urgent action. With a limited budget, we must carefully consider how we can use trees to promote a healthy climate.

Tree plantations take 25 years to become ‘climate-positive’ and achieve only a fraction of the biodiversity found in old-growth forests. In the early years, they even generate emissions as a result of their planting. That is why we are focusing our resources on urgently needed projects in the Amazon region of Peru and in British Columbia, Canada.

  • Why do we protect forests in Peru and Canada?

Wilderness International protects forests in Canada and Peru because these areas are unique and ecologically valuable habitats and, at the same time, offer a high degree of legal certainty. Through legally secure purchases with land registry entries, Wilderness International has full control over the land and ensures that the protected areas cannot be resold or used for commercial purposes.

In Canada, Wilderness International safeguards the temperate rainforest in British Columbia, one of the last large areas of its kind in the world. This ecosystem is home to unique species such as ghost bears, bald eagles and giant trees dating back thousands of years, and is one of the most species-rich forests in the Northern Hemisphere. Canada’s forests are important CO2 sinks and play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. The Canadian legal system, together with the remote location of the forests, provides additional protection against illegal entry.

In Peru, Wilderness International protects tropical rainforest in the Madre de Dios region, which is renowned for its immense biodiversity. These forests in the Amazon Basin regulate the climate and, through the water cycle, make a crucial contribution to the stability of the entire Amazon region. With the support of Forest Guardians, drones and sensors, the area is monitored to prevent unauthorised entry. The Guardians work closely with the local population to raise awareness of the need to protect the rainforest.

Both areas are of global importance as CO2 sinks and as habitats for rare species, and are therefore particularly worthy of protection.

Create your 1% forest for the planet

As a 1% partner of Wilderness International, you can symbolically establish your own corporate forest and, in doing so, make a tangible contribution to protecting the rainforest for all time. For example, Nø Cosmetics, Sumup and the Canada travel operator Kanadafieber are already doing this with us.

You are free to choose whether your plot of land should be located within our protected area in Peru or in Canada. In addition to your commitment, you can help your forest grow in size through various initiatives.

    1 m2  per product / service

Plant one piece of old-growth forest for every product sold, e.g. 1 m2 or more. This is what one of our long-standing partners does, for example: for every order placed in the online shop, 4 m2 of wilderness are preserved forever.
  • Balance scale depicting equilibrium between thriving plant growth and CO2 emissions, symbolizing climate neutrality.

    CO2 Offsetting

Use our CO2 calculator or your existing carbon footprint figure to help protect the rainforest. We’d be happy to put you in touch with contacts for personalised carbon offset calculations.
