Protected areas
Together with you, this year we were able to protect an incredible 4,105,599 m2 old-growth forest units in Canada and Peru for ever – building on the fantastic result from 2024. We are particularly delighted that we have gained many new donors this year, meaning our community has grown significantly.
In Peru, we have purchased new plots of land totalling 207 hectares, and in Canada, 159 hectares. On our online map, you can see all the areas we are protecting forever, as well as up-to-date aerial photographs and their exact protection status.
Peru Expedition
Together with long-standing partners as well as existing and new ambassadors, we then continued on to our existing protected areas in the Madre de Dios region. We were also joined by Rainer Kant, an independent consultant from B.A.U.M e.V., who shadowed us, the forest guardians and the researchers to gain an in-depth understanding of our projects with the local communities. We’ll be sharing his report with you shortly – it provides in-depth, expert insights into our work and the effectiveness of our efforts.

Farming for the Future
Our agroforestry project, which began at the end of 2023, is also continuing to go extremely well and is gaining further recognition and impact in the communities near our protected areas. Our new coordinator, Alejandro Hilares, is now working with 18 families from the local communities on sustainable agriculture.
In autumn 2025, we also held our first ‘Sembratón’ – a planting marathon in which children and young people from the Madre de Dios region’s climate team (ECIJ MDD) also took part.

Our new ambassadors
YouTopia – over 60,000 m2 protected
YouTopia – the biggest livestream dedicated to sustainability – was once again a resounding success! In mid-July, numerous well-known content creators, alongside host and presenter Jacob Beautemps, took part in an exciting race against time to permanently protect more than 60,m2-threatened rainforest in Peru.
Jacob, as our ambassador, has also released a series of fantastic videos exploring the secrets of the Amazon rainforest. Here’s one of them for you again.

Collaboration with businesses
Our corporate partnerships are a key pillar of our work. Together, we were able to protect 1,455,594 m2 of old-growth forest for ever in 2025 – in a measurable, transparent way and with maximum impact. Our partners take on responsibility that goes beyond traditional carbon offsetting and make a conscious choice to support this highly effective protection of intact ecosystems. What pleases us most is that these long-term partnerships are growing year on year – and are therefore having an ever-greater protective impact. Here you can get an idea of which companies, together with their staff, customers and communities, are becoming part of our work and actively contributing to the protection of the last remaining old-growth forests.

Alejandro Hilares
Agroforestry CoordinatorEver since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the rainforest: by its mysteries, its vitality and the extraordinary diversity of its flora and fauna. This early connection inspired me to study biology and helped me to understand that preserving biodiversity is only possible by working together with the people who live in these areas, particularly the farmers.
For this reason, during my studies I focused on developing methods to optimise agricultural production and on utilising local produce to create added value. In this way, I aim to help strengthen farmers’ livelihoods whilst promoting the protection of the rainforest as a path to prosperity and sustainability. -

CommunicationsAs a child in Piura, Peru, I dreamt of becoming a vet. Nature – the sun, the sea, the desert – taught me to observe the world with wonder. As a Girl Guide, I learnt what respect and care mean, under the stars, in the woods and within the community.
My career in culture and communication did not take me away from this passion – nature remained my refuge. At Wilderness International, I have finally found a place where I can combine both: communicating and protecting. I know that stories bring people together. And every story about the Amazon reminds us why we must protect what gives us life. -

Science (PhD student)A single tropical tree can be home to thousands of animal species – I didn’t realise that until I met Kai from the team. His passion for intact ecosystems inspires me. In a world where a dead tree counts for more than a living one, we must take action and demonstrate what functioning ecosystems are truly worth.
As a PhD student at WI, I want to make nature conservation tangible and transparent. Having spent over 10 years researching crowdfunding, crowdsourcing and blockchain at the Fraunhofer Society, I’m drawing on this experience to bring nature conservation to life.
In my spare time, I’m interested in how money can drive positive change – hence my interest in impact investing. Otherwise, I’m out and about in the North German countryside with my dog and playing football.

COMMUNICATIONSWhen I was five, I used to dream of becoming a whale researcher. I simply couldn’t imagine anything more wonderful than swimming with orcas and humpback whales.
I thought that childhood dream had faded. Until I applied to WI. Suddenly it was back: that childlike, naive, slightly romantic, excited and wild flutter in my heart.
And I realised very quickly that it is this flutter that brings such a diverse range of people together here for a common cause. The 5-year-old in me is doing a little dance of joy that I can be part of this and, in my own small way, still make a modest contribution to the protection of orcas, humpback whales and every other living creature on this planet.
I am firmly convinced that the preservation of our world lies in the wilderness, and that each and every one of us carries this wilderness within us, beating like a child’s heart.

COMMUNICATIONSIt’s amazing what you can do – and achieve – with a degree in German Studies! After several years as a content manager and copywriter in Berlin’s media and start-up scene, it was my thirst for adventure and my love of nature that led me to Wilderness International.
I grew up far from the urban jungle in the Elbe floodplains of central Germany, surrounded by the chorus of frogs, beaver lodges and flocks of cranes. As well as fun ornithological facts from the Middle Elbe biosphere, I’ve brought with me a wealth of creative ideas, wordplay and strategic communication skills to help preserve the flora and fauna in Peru and Canada. What links creativity and nature? Their wilderness. The untameable. That which is worth protecting.
I look forward to tackling the challenges of protecting the last wild forests on our planet, following the example of my favourite bird, the red-backed shrike – as thorny opportunities!

Member of the Board of TrusteesFor me, wilderness is a state in which humans are guests – respectful and unobtrusive. As a scientist, I have studied nature on various continents. Everywhere I went, I found only remnants of pristine ecosystems, whilst species are also disappearing in Germany.
In 2011, during a WI expedition, I experienced the rainforests on Canada’s Pacific coast. Centuries-old Douglas firs and giant thuja trees over 70 metres tall fascinated me. Yet often there were only a few trees, quickly counted, surrounded by regrowth on former clear-cut sites. How can we manage to leave these trees to the wilderness?
WI buys up the last remaining wilderness forests to prevent their deforestation. I am fully convinced by this approach – which is why I am delighted to be part of WI and to help protect the last wilderness areas on our planet. -

Quality Assurance EngineerI really enjoy the fresh morning air in the woods and love waking up early to watch the sun rise through the trees – it’s a peaceful and energising moment. That’s one of the reasons why I love trail running and trekking.
Outside of work, I’m passionate about running – especially after a long day in the office. I often take part in long-distance trail races, so consistent training over time is an essential part of my routine.
I’m also a big fan of plants! I have a small garden on my balcony, which brings me a lot of joy and helps me de-stress. It’s my own little way of staying connected to nature every day.

Partnerships ManagerThe rainforest I encountered on my first big trip showed me just how closely intertwined humans and the forest are – a habitat for thousands of species, a source of fresh air, a silent source of energy.
At Wilderness International, I’m fighting to preserve this bond. Together with our partner organisations, we’re safeguarding unique wilderness areas for future generations.
I am now applying my experience in corporate partnerships, strategy and communication (Cisco, Workday) to wilderness conservation. I am committed to genuine partnerships on an equal footing, where creative ideas have a measurable impact.
My goal: to save the Earth’s last great wilderness areas with strong partners.

Media ProductionI’ve been working as a filmmaker ever since I was a young adult, mainly in the documentary field. I love using real images to move people and to show the world in all its raw power. And, ideally, to bring about change.
What is happening to our planet – and consequently to our future – is devastating and terrifying; it’s easy to feel despair and helplessness.
So I’m all the happier to be supporting Wilderness International and its brilliant approach from now on with what I do best – making films. And spreading good cheer, because that’s something people often say I do well.

Media ProductionFilming and editing videos have always been a great passion of mine, but it never occurred to me that you could actually make a career out of it. That’s why I did a standard apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic and worked in that profession for over 15 years.
When I became a father, I took plenty of time out to travel with my children. That’s when my enthusiasm for filming was rekindled – after all, what could be better than being able to look back and see your own children when they were young? On our travels, I was able to capture countless moments amidst the most beautiful natural surroundings. This has greatly heightened my awareness of nature’s importance and the need to protect it.
It’s all the more wonderful that I can now combine all of this at WI – my passion for filming and editing with my commitment to protecting nature.

Back-end DeveloperI am a software developer with a passion for sport and nature. I love staying active through running, mountaineering and cycling, which not only keeps me fit but also fuels my creativity. Nature, particularly mountains and forests, is my ultimate source of peace and inspiration – I often explore the wilderness to recharge my batteries and find balance in life. I believe that true happiness comes from appreciating the simple things, whether it’s writing a perfect line of code or enjoying a peaceful moment on a mountain trail. Protecting nature and staying grounded are values that are close to my heart. -

CollaborationsMany leaves – one tree. We are connected.
I am driven to make an active contribution to the common good.
I secure strong funding partners to protect threatened ecosystems in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and western Canada. My goal: long-term, effective collaborations – from one leaf to many. That’s how a tree grows. A forest. A wilderness.
With over 20 years’ experience in events, networking, marketing and communications, I have worked with leading brands in finance, tech, mobility and lifestyle. I use this expertise to raise Wilderness International’s profile and impact – and to drive our shared goals forward with precision and passion.
